$1 - New Tampax Radiant 16 ct. at Walgreen's - Low Low Cost

This new product in it's shiny hot pink-purple box is on shelves in Walgreen's now.  However, I found them with the wrong price on an end cap at the back of the store at $5.49 each.

The are advertised in the weekly flyer for $3.99 and will print out a $1 Register Reward from the Catalina machine at check-out.  A friend told me that there is a $2 off 1 Tampax Radiant package inside the box (look for note about coupons inside on the front of the box).  So when I got to the register, I asked the cashier if it would be okay if I opened the box now and took out the coupon, since I was buying th package either way.  She said sure.

So:

Pay $3.99
Minus $1 Register Reward
Minus $2 manuf. coupon from inside box*
Net Cost = $0.99

*Just in case there was a problem opening it prior to paying, I brought along the coupon for $1 off 1 Tampax Radiant from the 3/4/12 P&G insert.  $1.99 would still be a good price for this item.

Coupons Are Not My Life - But I Sure Do Like Them!

"The" Original Coupon

  • Do I enjoy legitimately free and deeply discounted groceries from my local supermarket, also known as extreme saving.  Yes!
  • Do I spend a good deal of time reading a mixed bag of emails each week, scouring websites, blogs and more in search of great deals?  Yes!
  • Do I have a life beyond coupons and groceries?  Yes!
I recognize that it may seem to some that "all" I spend my time on is couponing.  It could be an easy conclusion or stereotype they might consider since they are probably receiving emails from me with links deals on products I believe they use or fit a need they have expressed, i.e. gluten free, low sodium, oil change, discounted gift cards, etc.  I will admit that sometimes a conversation turns to the topic of couponing when I have just experienced a great shopping trip with huge savings or totally free everything.  Once I share that little tidbit, I often am asked "How?"  After taking the time to explain how this level of savings was achieved, folks often asked questions like "Where do you get the coupons?"  "Can you tell me how I can get really cheap or free razors (or organics, or dog food, or produce, and on and on).

Some folks are interested because they don't want to pay more than is necessary on a regular basis; some are interested because they want to help others (family, food banks, animal shelters, neighbors...).  And, some folks are just curious.  That's why I choose to make a mental note of their interest and send off an email when I see a great deal on products or services they use or expressed interest in.  I certainly don't receive any compensation for sending what I consider a thoughtful link or article.  It's not as though the emails go out willy-nilly simply because there is some deal to be had.  However, if someone shops on Amazon regularly and there is a great deal like yesterday's where an Amazon gift card was 50% off, why wouldn't I send a link.  They can use the info or ignore it.  They can ask me to stop sending them if they are offensive, annoying or extraneous.  The only benefit I get is the satisfaction of sharing.

So what may seem like an obsession to one person, may be a necessity or lifestyle or helpful to another.  I think many are guilty of graciously and even cheerfully sharing information that can be useful or helpful to others.  After all, it's not as though I am forcing it on anyone... expecting or demanding them to listen to me and buy that discounted gift card online, or print those coupons and get their free razors or groceries.

  • Am I a couponista?  Maybe.
  • Am I a coupon dictator.  No
  • Do I have a life beyond coupons?  Yes.  It includes spending time with family, creative writing, pets, hobbies unrelated to shopping, reading, exercising (more emphasis could be placed on this one), films, social networking, and more.

THINGS TO KNOW: Where (& What) Are Swag Codes (aka FREE Amazon Gift Cards).

 WHERE TO FIND SWAG CODES

FREE $5 AMAZON GIFT CARDS & MORE

I know it is can be hard to believe that you can GET TOTALLY (100%) FREE AMAZON GIFT CARDS, but it is completely legitimate, well-known and too easy to pass on if you are all for saving and buying at a discount.

I've accumulated a goodly number of free Amazon.com gift cards for absolutely no money or financial commitment of any sort from me -- all thanks to Swag Bucks.  Basically, I do my internet searches online and spontaneously earn Swag Bucks, which I accumulate and turn in for Amazon.com gift cards (there are so many other items to choose - gift cards, electronics, jewelry, magazines, office supplies, edibles, music, and on and on).   You can also pick up plenty of points (again -- for no money from you) from other Swag Bucks website activities, such as watching very short video clips, playing games, taking single-question polls, taking surveys, and more painless ways to earn Swag Bucks.

I guess it's time to move on from my digression to some info about SWAG CODES.  These are short strings of alpha/numeric text that you simply enter into a box on the Swag Bucks home page and - poof - you get SWAG BUCKS.  You can find the straight details about Swag Bucks and Swag Codes in this article from the folks at Swag Bucks:

BOGO Breakfast - FREE Breakfast at Bob Evans When You Buy A Breakfast

BOB EVANS RESTAURANTS
Valid March 24 - April 7, 2012
(not applicable on Sundays &Tuesday Family Nights)

Interestingly, this coupon does not say that only one BOGO FREE breakfast deal maybe be had per coupon.  This leads me to believe that you can get multiple FREE breakfasts at one table using just one coupon.  Also, the coupon has a typo in it that says "may only be printed and used on time".  I'm assuming it should say "one time".  However, if they stick to what it says, then you should be able to print and use more than once as long as you do so "on time".  So take a minute and call a Bob Evans restaurant if you would like clarification before going.  Coupon applies to dine-in meals only.

ALDI'S Newbie -- Liberating!!

I've been a die-hard Publix shopper for a while now, with a very occasional Target trip.  I've nearly mastered the most efficient methods for saving an average of 70% savings.  And I'm very satisfied with that at this time.  But I was lured in to the nearly new Aldi's by the weekly ad that started today.  How could I resist 89¢ per pound for split boneless chicken breasts.  The fun began when we parked and found "free" shopping cart, already saving me 25¢ before I walked in the door.  I felt like I was in a cartoon, as I looked at every product on the deep shelves filled with boxes of neatly packed boxes and bags of popular items with packaging and names that often sound like and look like the "name" brand, but are being offerred at a deep discount, also known as Aldi's everday low prices.

I spent $30.06 and feel like I got a great bang for my buck.  At first I had an unusual, sort of creepy feeling like I was missing some obvious deal to be made by stacking coupons and BOGOs.  It was becuse my brain was not in BOGO-coupon-stacking mode as it usually is in Publix.  It was absolutely a liberating shopping experience to shop with nothing but cash in my pocket.  During this trip, I did not miss my aisle by aisle list from Publix's website, nor my coupon organizer filled with coupons harvested from blinkie machines, magazines, peelies, mail requests, displays, booklets, packaging, and of course Sunday newspaper inserts.  The only disappointment was that there were no more 89¢ boneless chicken breasts, as they they were all gone within two hours of opening the store.  Obviously they don't receive enough.  I spoke to one of the staff and she explained that each store gets an amount determined by management outside the store.

For $30.08, I bought:
3 lb boneless chicken breast, frozen, 5.99
16" deli pizza, (this is very large) 4.99
1 giant pineapple 1.39
2 lb pears 1.19
2 lb green grapes 1.79
3 lb onions .99
32 oz Lite & Fit nonfat plain yogurt 1.99
1 garlic lovers hummus 1.69
1 bag shrimp lo mein, frozen (serves 4) 3.99
12" frozen cheese pizza .99
12" frozen combo pizza 1.99
1 raisins 1.79
1 sweet pickle relish 1.29

I count about 24 lunches or dinners, plus snacks out of this shop.  I'll just need to supplement the chicken, lo mein and pizzas with a salad or some freebie Birdseye veggies alrady stockpiled at home.  I defiitely would have done better at Publix mostly because I have a Winn-Dixie coupon for $5 off $30.  Beyond that, I probably could have save a couple of dollars on the lo mein.  We ate the $1.99 pizza with some homemade roasted veggies for dinner tonight.   It was full of flavor, had a perfectly crispy crust and a nice covering of gooey melted cheeze.  So dinner tonight cost 1.99 (as I got the veggies for free last month in Publix during the great Birdseye deal where some turned in to moneymakers.

If you haven't been to Aldi's, which is part of a successful international supermarket company with stores throughout the world,  I would recommend giving it a try if for nothing other than the incredible produce prices that Publix doesn't come close to.  You'll also get to witness the incredibly thoughtful and respectful way that the cashiers are provided with cushioned seats with backs so they can remain comfortable and off their feet throught much of their work day.  I applaud that practice.

Happy Shopping

$2 Meal for Two - Eat Well - Coupons Are A Must

$2 Dinner For 2
Ingredients & Instuctions

This meal serves well as a lunch, brunch or dinner, and breakfast of course.  Thanks to shopping with coupons, we are able to enjoy this healthy meal for $1 or less per person, based on recipes for 2.

How?
When the perfect combination of sales, store coupons, and manufacturer coupons come together to create a scenario where I can get groceries totally FREE or at a super low price, I tend to stock up.  We have a pretty large freezer chest in the garage, which has many packages of FREE Birdseye Steamfresh vegetables (no sauce).  They were on sale at 50% off, and I combined store coupons with manufacturer coupons and paid nothing.   For eggs I pay no more than $1.20/dozen.  For Kraft Big Slices Swiss cheese I pay no more than $2 (10 slices).  We like Arnold's whole grain breads and pay an average of  $1.59 per package (at least 16 slices).  I usually get produce from the big indoor farmer's market open 7-days a week, or from discount supermarket, Aldi's.  I buy produce at Publix too, but usually just fill-in or sale items.

Options:
Toss the egg yolks, use a different cheese, other fruit combo, crackers or biscuits instead of bread.  It shouldn't affect the price if you found good deals.

HUGE Health Care Savings - Worth A Look to Save Thousands A Year on Premiums & Out-Of-Pocket Costs

First I want to establish for purposes of this message that I am a consumer who explores as many options that I can come up to find the very best deal on any item or service before I make a purchasing decision.   I enjoy sharing this information with family, friends and strangers that don't want to overpay for necessities and for comforts.  With that said, I realize this post is a little out of the ordinary for this blog, however it is in fact about savings - tremendous savings - on healthcare costs.   I also want to make it known that I have absolutely no personal or professional financial interest, investment or income as it relates to the plan discussed here.

  • "I found the Federal Plan to cost 40% - 50% LESS than the private insurance plan."
  • "I found the prescriptions to cost $10 for a 90-day supply."

There is a tremendous savings opportunity for what I consider a very good healthcare / medical insurance PPO plan that many people either don't know about have been subjected to misinformation that slams one of the greatest healthcare plans available at virtually the lowest rate through the United States government.

If you know somone that is struggling with super high healthcare insurance premiums and deductibles and he/she has a pre-existing condition*, or perhaps no health insurance at all but would prefer to, then take a look, or a re-look at the Federal Government's Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, a healthcare insurance plan available to Americans that have a pre-existing condition.  You can check the eligibility criteria here.

I looked at the plans and premiums for Florida.  The Federal PCIP plan utilizes the First Health network of healthcare providers.  First Health's website has an easy-to-use online tool that allows you to search for medical providers of all sorts by zipcode, city, etc.  You can perform a provider search here (no registration or login required).  I found the Federal plan to be 40% - 50% LESS than the private insurance plan.  I also found every single one of my phsycians and healthcare providers in the Federal PCIP plan.  I found the prescriptions to be a great buy at $10 for a 90-day supply for most formulary medications.

I simply can't understand why the federal government isn't doing a better job of advertising this plan.  Think about other campaigns from federal programs that have provided public education through TV commercials, newspaper and magazine display ads and articles, brochures, etc., such as the The Food Pyramid, Dangers of Lead Paint, etc.  So this is my public service announcement.

*Many folks don't realize that healthcare insurers can consider just about everything a "pre-existing condition" to charge a very high montly premium, including common conditions such as allergies, acne, back or neck problems, arthritis, asthma, high or low blood pressure, palpitations, anxiety, stomach problems like acidic stomach/gastritis/ulcer/GERD, bronchitis, and then there are the ones most people are aware of like diabetes, heart failure, auto-immune diseases, birth defects, kidney failure, and on and on.
